How Is the Poetry Doing in Your Homeschool?
Do you feel that you or your children
appreciate poetry as much as you could or should?
Do you guiltily sometimes skip the poetry
when reading a book aloud because neither you nor the
children enjoy it?
Let us show you how fun and rewarding
reading and writing poetry can be!
Charlotte Mason-- ON POETRY
"He should have practice, too, in reading aloud, for the
most part, in the books he is using for his term's work.
These should include a good deal of poetry, to
accustom him to the delicate shades of meaning, and
especially to make him aware that words are beautiful in
themselves, that they are a source of pleasure, and are
worthy of our honour; and that a beautiful word deserves to
be beautifully said, with a certain roundness of tone and
precision of utterance."(Emphasis mine)

“Sometimes, it seems that I have almost forgotten to
emphasize poetry as a tool for word study, grammar,
vocabulary, spelling, or just good listening and smiles for
all ages, from toddler to adult. Toddlers just naturally
love rhythm and rhyme, and I don’t think any of us outgrow
that. So, I want to encourage you—don’t forget the poetry!”
INTRODUCING OUR EBOOKLET ON GETTING STARTED WITH POETRY:

| My Grandpa
He reached for a bowl, He reached for a spoon,
He ate a bowl of ice cream While looking at
the moon.
The moon smiled at Grandpa. Grandpa smiled
back. He scooped a bit more ice cream And
piled it on the stack.
Copyright 2002 by Jasmine Ringger, age 11
Her grandpa (my dad) eats ice cream almost every
night before bed! Just one of his famous habits...
Poetry is a wonderful way to express thoughts,
memories, and feelings that others may share. This
poem reminded a visitor of her own grandfather.
"I just love the poem your 11 year old wrote about
Grandpa - it brought tears to my eyes because it
reminded me so much of my own grandfather. He's been
dead for over 20 years but I've walked around today
with many memories of him that make me smile."
